Week Five
The week did not start of great
weather wise. Monday was overcast with evening showers; it was drizzly
and cool on Tuesday; and it rained on Wednesday. Thursday
the sun came out - it hit 83 and it has been nice ever since.
It finally feels like summer!
Monday morning, the Five Day trip left for Lake Aziscohos which is on
the Maine/New Hampshire boarder. The group of 13 campers and 4
counselors spent their first night at the northern end of the
lake, canoeing half way down the lake on the second day; spent 2
nights at the middle camp sight where they hiked up Lincoln Pond
stream and then canoed to the southern end of the lake to Beaver Island
for the last night. Before returning to camp on Friday, they hiked
Aziscohos Mountain.
On Tuesday, another camping trip left for Acadia Park. This group of 13
campers and 4 counselors camped in the National Park and spent
Wednesday biking the extensive carriage paths of the park. They also
got up early one morning to catch the sunrise on Cadillac Mountain -
the first place in the country to witness the sunrise.
Back at camp, the campers were busy with activities. Due to the
cool weather and cool lake temps, instructional swim was optional for
the first few days. Now with the warmer weather, the swim docks are
busy again. In addition to the regular activities, campers participated
in an invitational soccer tournament at Agawam taking first place for
the second year in a row; a 15 & under baseball game; a 12 &
under soccer game; a 12 & under tennis match and a sailing regatta
on Saturday. We also had 22 campers and 16 counselors run in the 4 mile
Casco Day Road Race. It was the first really hot and humid day
this summer but everyone had trained hard and they finished strong. One
of our counselors came in 5th over all out of 500+ runners and 2
campers were each first in their age group.
On Friday afternoons, we usually schedule "Friday trips" which might
include a hike up Rattlesnake Mountain, a canoe or sailing trip down
Panther Pond to Hawthorn Point, or numerous other short local
trips.
This past Friday was the first
Friday this summer that the
weather cooperated and the trips took place!! When the campers
returned from their various trips, they had a quick swim and then had
"Friday Candy". The girls from Big Wohelo came over that evening
to join us for dinner and a dance. The Barn was converted from a
dining hall to a dance floor, the music was loud and the barn was hot
but everyone seemed to have a great time.
Saturday night, the whole camp marched to Crows' Point with the
Mallards leading the way. There a great meal of barbecued chicken
and corn was waiting for us and everyone ate well. It all just
tastes better when you are outdoors with the entire camp
together.
This next week will be very busy. Just a few of the things planned
include "Beach Day", "Junior Granddaddy Gorilla", and Don Fendler, the
author of "Lost on a Mountain in Maine" will be speaking to the boys
about his adventure over 60 years ago when he was lost for 9 days at
the age of 12 on Mt. Katahdin - the largest mountain in Maine.
