Week Four

The second half campers arrived on Monday for the start of the second session.  They were well received by the current campers who were anxious to help them settle into camp life. The new campers went to orientation periods in riflery, archery, woodshop and sailing on Tuesday and Wednesday.  On Thursday morning, they were able to start signing up for their activities.  It has now been a week since they arrived and it seems like they have been here all summer.

We had 2 "sign-up" trips this week. The first left on Monday and traveled to Baxter State Park in Maine.  On Tuesday, they climbed Mt. Katahdin and despite some ominous weather, they were able to get great views from the top. Although they were tired after the climb, they all agreed it was a great trip.  (We were of course glad we did not have any repeats of  "Lost on a Mountain in Maine" and we look forward to meeting Don Fendler (author and lost boy) later this summer.)

The second trip left on Wednesday and traveled to the the Grafton Notch area for Timanous' first backpacking trip.  A small group of 3 counselors and 7 campers carrying all of their gear, tents, and food on their backs, hiked approximately 8 miles each day along the Appalachian Trail.  They returned to camp on Friday having had  a fantastic time. The trip will certainly be repeated next year.

Friday morning was Granddaddy "Gorilla" -- a giant game of  hide-and-seek where the counselors hide and the campers seek.  You would not believe the lengths some of the counselors will go to not to be found. The counselors are worth different points if found, 45 for the "Granddaddy Gorilla" ,40 for a "old" head, 35 for a regular head, etc. The cabin with the most points wins.  This year, the Cardinals won in the upper bunkline and the Herons won in the lower bunkline.

Friday afternoon was our 3rd round of Capture the Flag and the first time for the new campers.  Although neither team won, the games were very exciting with lots of action and people getting into the circle.

In addition we had a 13 & under Volleyball game, a 15 & under Basketball game, both 15 & under and  12 & under tennis matches, a 15 & under soccer game,  a 15 & under riflery meet, and a sailing regatta.  Campers and counselors with relatives at Little Wohelo traveled there for dinner Wednesday night and those with relatives at Big Wohelo went there Friday night.

The weather continues to be cooler and rainier than normal.  We thought we had a change in the weather pattern when we had two sunny days in a row when it actually got into the 80s but it was short lived. It is cool with showers today and we are expecting heavy rain tomorrow.  After that, we are suppose to see the sun and 80s again!
