Summer 2005

Back To Summer Of 2005 Main Page.

This week started off with us all having to say good bye to the boys who had come for the first half.  They had become good friends and it was hard to say good bye.  That afternoon, 27 campers arrived ready to go!  They quickly got settled in their cabins and went to the afternoon activities.  For the first day and a half, the second half campers went to orientation in riflery, archery, woodshop and sailing.  By Wednesday afternoon, they were able to sign up for activities and now a week into the program, they know the whole routine.

We had two "sign-up" trips go out this week. The first left on Monday with 8 boys and 3 counselors to backpack in Gafton Notch State Park. Unlike our other trips,  they carried everything they needed on their back. They spent 3 days and 2 nights following a new trail which took them up East and West Baldpate, Long and Puzzle Mountains. Everyone had a great trip. The second group left on Wednesday to make the long drive to Baxter State Park in Maine. The next morning, they were up early to climb the highest mountain in Maine, Mt Katahdin,  which is also the end of the Appalachian Trail. They had an absolutely gorgeous day, had a great climb and were rewarded with fantastic views at the top.  They returned to camp on Friday afternoon.

Friday morning, the campers and counselors played 3 very exciting games of Capture the Flag. Although there was a lot of great action, no one got the flag.  That evening, boys with sisters at Big Wohelo, went over for dinner and evening activities.  Saturday evening, after cookouts, we all went up to the hall where 2 cabins did cabin skits which were very entertaining.

Competitions this week  included the annual Agawam 6-a-side soccer tournament to which we sent a strong team that made it to the finals but lost in a shoot out!  Very exciting.  Campers also played in a 15 & under basketball game, a 10 & under kickball and 15 & under baseball games.  The sailing team went to a regatta at Wyonegonic where they placed 2nd and Wohelo where they placed 1st!

We had another great week of weather.  We had a few thunderstorms come through late in the afternoons with the strongest coming through Friday evening while we were eating dinner.

The summer seems to be going by too quickly.  Although we do not like thinking about the end of camp, we have sent out the travel letters. Please let us know as soon as possible how your son will be returning home and very importantly, if we are shipping his trunk -- it makes everything much easier if we know that information prior to the closing days. Feel free to email us the information.

The Backpacking Trip

The Mt. Katahdin Trip

I don't normally include this many pictures of the camping trip but I thought they really showed some great parts of the climb.  If you have never climbed Katahdin, I think from the pictures you will get a feel of just how difficult a climb it is.

A New Activity

The campers accidentally discovered that the hill was great for sliding when it was wet!!

Climbing up Rattlesnake Mountain

Friday Trips
Friday afternoon, we had 3 "trips" , one group canoed down the lake to Hawthorne Point for a swim, one sailed the same course and the 3rd group climbed Rattlesnake Mountain. At the top, they could look down on Panter Pond and Sebago Lake.  It was time for "Friday Candy" when they returned.
