It's
hard to believe that we have all been here just a little over a
week. Everyone is into the routine and the "new campers" have all
experienced Friday candy, Saturday night cabin cookouts, Sunday
letters, Laundry Day, "Jimmy Buffet", "Sign-ups", Twilight League,
Capture the Flag and many other special activities.
The first few days were unusually
hot and humid -- the lake quickly warmed up and it was a great place to
be. The boys took dips the first several nights before bed. The
weather took a change for the better on Saturday and it is now sunny,
dry and in the high 70s.
On Friday, the second day of
camp, our orientation period started with all cabins going as a group to
riflery, archery, tennis, sailing, and woodshop. This allows the
new campers to learn the rules and experience the activity while the
returning campers get a quick refresher. Everyone took a swim test and
the instructional swim groups were established. We also had our
annual book fair on Friday afternoon and many of the boys were able to
pick up some great summer reading.
Orientation continued through the weekend and on Monday, everyone was
ready to start "sign-ups" which allow the boys to chose their
activities for the morning after breakfast and for the afternoon after
lunch. Additional activities open included kayaking, the climbing wall,
handicrafts, lacrosse, baseball, soccer, waterskiing, basketball,
canoeing and boating.
Also on Monday, the counselors announced the "Twilight League" teams
with humerous skits. All campers are members of a Twilight team.
The softball games are played during free evenings and the teams
consist of campers of all ages and all abilitites. Part of the
fun is in the a crazy names. This years League is made up of The Bucket
Feet, The Bully Beaters, The Fun Police, Los Caballerus Locos, The Dead
Eyed Zombies,Mario Kart, F.U.L.M.O.,and The Backwoods Monsters.Ask your
son what team he is on.
The Ravens left for their trip to Lake Umbagog on Monday. They had 3
great days of canoeing starting at the southern end of the lake before
handing over the canoes to the Cardinals on Wednesday. The Cardinals
continued to the northern end of the lake, also spending 2 nights
camping by the lake and returning to camp on Friday afternoon.
This was the first trip for our 2 recently restored wooden canoes,
originally purchased in the 1940s. This winter, they were both
completely redone and are absolutely gorgeous.
In addition to all the activites I've listed, we had several
competitions with other camps including a 12 & under soccer game, a
10 & under basketball game, 15 & under and 11 &
under baseball games and a 14 & under tennis match. On Sunday, a
group of sailers went over to Wohelo, our sister camp to sail on Sebago
Lake and a group of Wohelo girls came to play soccer. On Friday
evening, the Crows went to the annual dance at Camp Arcadia, a girls'
camp.
