It's hard to believe this is our last
full week of camp and it was a very busy week.
Monday morning started with disrobing at instructional swim. We
were lucky to have Bill Van Order, our former waterfront director,
return to run the period. Bill (known as BVO) was at camp as a
camper and counselor for a total of 45 years! The boys arrived at swim
in a long sleeve shirt and a pants over their bathing suits. After
learning the importance of this skill, they have the opportunity to
jump into the water, see how it feels when their clothing gets
wets, learn how to remove their wet , heavy clothing and then to use
their pants and shirts as inflation devices. Luckily the laundry
went out immediately after swim!
Tuesday evening, the Mallards cabin ventured to Crow's point for their
camping trip. It was a beautiful evening and they arrived in time to
pitch their tents, cook dinner, play games, and roast
marshmallows before going to bed. Luckily they were asleep in
their tents when a thunderstorm rolled in!
Wednesday afternoon, the whole camp played three very exciting
games of
Capture the Flag. There was a lot of action and both flags were
moved. There will be one more chance to play this last week.
Wednesday night, we enjoyed the Timanous Music/Talent Show. It was a
great event. We have a lot of very talented campers and the
enthusiasm for the evening was outstanding. At the end of the
show, the big announcement was that the next day would be Beach Day!
Thursday was a perfect beach day. Everyone came up to breakfast in
their bathing suits with their towels and beach supplies and the whole
camp left for the beach right after breakfast. There was lots of sand
castle building and although the water was chilly but it didn't stop
the kids from swimming. I have put the pictures from the day on
their own page as there were so many great pictures. Please go to
Beach Day.
We returned to camp late that afternoon, dipped in the lake, had dinner
and then everyone went to the hall for a movie. Everyone was exhausted
after a day in the sun.
Friday morning was Junior Granddaddy Gorilla. The campers
had 40 minutes to find a hiding spot. They are not allowed to hide in
buildings, in or around cars, higher than their own height or in
the boats or water. Some of them came up with some great hiding spots
but the counselors are pretty good searchers and only 5 campers
remained unfound.
Saturday night was Horse Races, a fun tradition where the counselors
are the horses. They chose their name and then dress or act out the
theme. They have a lot of imagination and it's great fun to
see what they come up with. Once they are introduced, the campers can
"place their bets" and the race begins with the "horses" advancing with
the roll of dice. It is always a fun night.
Competitions outside of camp included a 10 & under kickball game,
the Agawam Tennis Tournament and the Winona Regatta where
unfortunately, the wind did not blow.
The weather has continued to be fantastic. As of today, we have
not had a "rainy day" all summer -- something I do not every remember
happening before. Of course they are now predicting showers for
Wednesday and Thursday!
These last few days will just fly by. We are looking forward to
all the activities we have yet to do and are trying not to think how
quiet the place will be next week at this time! Please contact us
if you have any questions about the end of camp
